Web Trends Meetup

This review looks at how Computing has become world-wide personally pervasive – 66% of the world’s population have a  personal computer.    But not  quite as expected – the PCs are predominately mobile phones  and though slightly lagging [59.5%  of mobile PCs are connected to the Web], these PCs are not isolated silos of information. This continuing world-wide growth of the Mobile Web-connected PCs forms the backdrop for our Web Trends review. There will be a  Zoom meetup to discus these trends – see here for details. Also see at bottom of this page the tips for using the 3DFlipBook PDF viewer; it is easy to use.

As computing over the last 75 years has gone from large organization specialty to personal info and communication devices, one constant has been accelerating change – usage, technology, software development,  learning curve – every aspect of computing. So it should not be a surprise to see Web Change as a major trend.

But continued large growth of mobile phones use on the Web is aided by mobile innovations like PWA, AMP, , 5G etc. Current Web Trends are also seeing a longer adoption cycle 2-3 years However, the most disconcerting trend is theWeb going dark as CyberAttacks have become a big business – forcing 5 million users to adopt ever more elaborate self defense measures.

Cyber Attacks in the past have been infrequent and confined to large organizations – not any more! This year thre has been 4 huge Ransomware attacks with thousand of website victims and multi-million dollar ransom payments And huge data breaches  continue to expose users private data with only a pittance of compensation to the victims.

And many of the Cyberattacks are enabled by super-organized hackers who have created a sophisticated HACKaas set of tools to create ever more effective hack attacks, Cybercriminals are now ahead of the curve in fleecing your data and/or websites.

Cloud Computing has grown over the past 5 years because it promises lower cost of operations , ability to dynamically scale up or down computing power to meet changing business need and deliver  broader connectivity options  and thus helping to break down isolated silos of information within and between organizations.

But now more organizations large and small are using Cloud Computing to bolster their backup, update and  CyberSecurity in view of the recent onslaught of Cyber Attacks. But how much safer are Cloud platforms ?

Mobile technology has seen steady improvement from 2G to 5G through soon appearing 6G bringing a steady tenfold speed improvements,  wider range and better resiliency. But on the software side mobile devices have had to cede better performance  to PCs.

However Google and a host of players have recently changed the equations with technologies like PWA, AMP, Web Assembly, and IoT. But wait…IoT and 5G present Cybersecurity risks…..

Web Computing = Change  …. but now Web Computing = Very Fast Change. Across the board from hardware technology to software tools through to development and release processes change in every aspect of computing and the Web is arriving faster than ever. For example, 5 years ago HTML+Fonts+Scripts made up the biggest chunk of webpage size. 3 years ago, average webpage size had grown by 20% and images accounted for 55% of the load. Now video has 60% of 30% bigger webpage load. Bottom line, Gartner is raising concerns about IT staff being able to cope with security and development load.

The Web Trends for 2021 extend well beyond into 2022 – the Pandemic, Cloud Computing, the incessant Move to Mobile. But by far, the major trend affecting WordPress, the Web and Computing in general has been the emergence of professional CyberCriminals armed with a potent network of Dark Web tools designed to fleece you with ease.

It is not a pretty scene so the presentation will review apps and plugins that can keep the Hackers at Bay. Starting with password vaults, Email and PC Firewall apps, bolstering browser security and then looking at firewalls for WordPress and other user websites.

There will be a Zoom Meetup on September 8th 2021 to discus this- – alr eaders are welcome to attend.
